Social Theory Essay Framework

A strong social theory essay does not list thinkers. It compares how thinkers define the problem of modern society.

Problem

Start by asking what each theorist thinks is broken or newly important. Marx focuses on exploitation and alienation in capitalism. Weber focuses on rationalization, bureaucracy, authority, and meaning. Durkheim focuses on solidarity, moral regulation, and the danger of anomie.

Method

Notice what counts as evidence. Marx reads economic relations and class conflict. Weber builds interpretive categories for meaningful social action. Durkheim treats social facts as things that can be studied empirically.

Social order

Each theory explains how order is produced and threatened. Markets, class relations, law, religion, bureaucracy, and norms all create order in different ways. The essay should show what each thinker sees clearly and what each may understate.

Comparative thesis

Use a thesis such as: Marx explains domination through production, Weber through authority and rationalization, and Durkheim through regulation and solidarity. Then test that thesis on specific concepts.
